MedTech Corporate Updates May 2010

Nursing

National Nurses Day, also known as National RN Recognition Day, is always celebrated on May 6th and opens National Nurses Week. National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6th and ends on May 12th, the birth date of Florence Nightingale. National Nurses Week is one of the nation’s largest health care events, recognizing the contributions and commitments nurses make and educating the public about the significant work they perform. Be sure to thank the nurses at your campus for all they do!

MedTech College was a proud sponsor of the 8th annual Salute to Nurses formal luncheon and awards ceremony hosted by The Indianapolis Star, honoring the dedication and impact of nursing professionals in the state of Indiana. The winners of these awards were announced on April 28, 2010. The purpose of this annual event is to honor nurses and nurse educators from around the state who provide selfless service and tireless dedication to the community. In addition, Salute to Nurses provides scholarships to deserving Nursing Students. MedTech College’s Bonnie Adkins from the Greenwood Campus received a scholarship this year—making her MedTech College’s first recipient.
Twenty-two of the thirty Greenwood Registered Nursing graduates or 73% (December and March) who have attempted the NCLEX-RN exam are now licensed nurses in the state of Indiana. Eighteen of those twenty-two or 82% are currently working at: St. Francis Beech Grove, Golden Living, American Senior Communities, IU Medical Group, University Heights, Country Side Manor, and Community North. As other registered nursing graduates test, we will keep you posted on their successes.

Lexington Campus

The MedTech Campus in Lexington, KY is experiencing phenomenal growth in student and faculty population. In the past six months, the Lexington Campus has more than doubled student population and tripled the number of instructors. With this being said, this has prompted the need for continued growth in the infrastructure of staff. The addition of Assistant Academic Dean, Helen Bukulmez, has enriched the campus’ ability to reach out to student’s needs. The Lexington Campus looks forward to its continued growth in student achievement through the growth of staff and faculty.

We are excited to announce that Stephen Bright, Program Director of MLT/BIO at the Indianapolis Campus recently received his categorical certification as a Specialist in Blood Bank Technology (SBB) from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). SBBs carry out all operations of the blood bank, from routine testing to the most advanced procedures. The majority of today’s SBBs are technical supervisors and laboratory managers and oversee reference laboratories, SBBs also work in other areas such as education and research. All Specialist in Blood Bank Technology Programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

Graduation

The Indianapolis and Greenwood campuses are pleased to announce that they had their first MLT graduating class in April 2010.

Financial Services

As most of us are all well aware now, the government has required all students and schools to use Direct Lending for their federal student loans. In our last article, we covered what exactly those changes meant for the students and schools. Fortunately, we are seeing mostly the positive changes that we were promised as we all venture into this new territory for all of us. As a reminder, however, each student is REQUIRED to have an active Federal Four Digit PIN in order to participate in the program. If you filed your FAFSA online and signed it online, this is the same PIN. If you are unsure, don’t remember yours or have not filed for one, please go to one of the following websites in order to apply.
http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ and click on PIN site. It’s the fourth option across the top menu.
Or
http://www.pin.ed.gov/PINWebApp/pinindex.jsp and choose the appropriate option from the menu on the left. Here you can apply for a new PIN, request a duplicate as well as several other options.
Please contact your Financial Aid office with any additional questions.
